This project analyzes the US-Mexico soccer rivalry as a space for political and cultural expression. In existing scholarship, the importance of this rivalry as a space of public opinion has been widely overlooked for years. My work seeks to connect soccer to the deeper political and cultural tensions that define the relationship between the United States and Mexico. Using newspaper articles, photographs, player and fan testimonies, commercials, and memoirs, I can methodically present this rivalry from a wide range of perspectives. My project seeks to expand public understanding of how soccer is not just a sport for Mexican American communities, but also a space for cultural and political expression.
